FLORIDA - Age not a barrier to his education as high as possible. Cliche is the case of Richard Smith who came from Florida, USA. In old age, 87 years, Smith graduated from the doctoral education program at Florida International University.Thanks to the persistence received his education, a former pilot in World War II was crowned as the oldest person to graduate from college in the South Florida area. Smith earned his Ph.D. thanks to a dissertation on the history of the American Civil War era politician John Sherman.
"This is a good way to stay young," Smith said as quoted from Huffingtonpost, Tuesday (08/16/2011).
So, why Smith wanted to go even though he was not young? Smith claimed this happened thanks to encouragement from his wife, Zenaida Hernandez Smith. Smith indeed had stopped working or retired at age 70. He quit the family clothing business in Miami.
At that time, Hernandez Smith saw a program for senior citizens. He also urged Smith to immediately sign up. "I said, 'Hey listen, you have to do something because it makes me short of breath here,'" said the woman who just turned 34 this year.
He obeyed and took some classes. He was happy for his involvement with classmates and lecturers young so he could focus through college for six years. Moreover, there is one thing that makes Smith impressed. "There are many pretty girls there," Gomez said.
Having had a degree, Smith began to consider teaching. But he still needs a lot of time to make decisions. Smith had a special message for everyone.
"For anyone out there who thinks too late to go back to school, I tell them that it's all wrong," he concluded.
